Caring for our environment

Year 1 had a wonderful time in the sunshine at Beach School. They spent the day at Thurstaston beach and started off with a beach clean. It was a great opportunity to talk about the different materials we can find on the beach; some are man-made, some are natural, some things can stay on the beach, some need to be collected and put in a bin. The girls used litter-pickers and gloves to collect a range of plastic wrappers and broken fishing nets. A great lesson in caring for our environment.
They then explored the natural objects that can be found on the beach: shells, pebbles, fish egg cases, seaweed, feathers and talked about the properties of these objects. Are they hard or soft, rough or smooth, transparent or opaque? They then sorted these objects by putting them in groups together.

The girls are at the beginning of their learning journey in listening to one another and working together, as well as building their own independence and decision making. Outdoor learning creates the perfect opportunity for building on all these skills. They are very much looking forward to their next day out at Delamere Forest next month.
