Beach School is proving as popular as ever this year with approximately 70 trips completed so far since its inception in 2019.
Year 1 was the first to explore the beach this academic year, as the girls discussed the materials they found, which linked to their science lessons. They also used metal detectors to see if they could find any metals under the sand. After this, they made houses as if they were the three little pigs living on the beach, using only natural materials. They all had so much fun and even got to enjoy some sunshine.
Year 2 was next to venture to the coast, where they took up the role of palaeontologists, digging for fossils and signs of dinosaur life! They also created dinosaurs in pairs out of sand, pebbles and shells, adding different features such as feathers and scales.
Year 3 transported back to the Stone Age via Thurstaston Beach during their trip. The girls searched the beach for resources that could provide them with food, water, warmth or shelter. They then created imaginative cave paintings in the sand to represent their surroundings and also used their surroundings to compose a class poem for National Poetry Day.
Reception had a wonderful time at their first Beach School experience. They loved searching for interesting treasure and were very excited to find some sea glass and sea pottery, pretty shells, and a mermaid’s purse. The class made art on the beach with stones, shells, and twigs and enjoyed making sandcastles. They also had lots of fun playing on the hill and eating a picnic with their friends.
Beach School is a key part of our outdoor learning curriculum at the Lower School where girls develop valuable skills. It encourages them to be active, assess situations, take risks, and make decisions, with lots of activities to develop both fine and gross motor skills. The girls learn to be self-sufficient and take care of themselves, which boosts their confidence and self-esteem.
