With MUN season is in full swing, a team of 11 Queen’s girls and two members of staff travelled to Altrincham Girls Grammar School to take part in their conference, ALTYMUN. Our team included both old hands and newcomers, and it was particularly pleasing to see several Year 8 pupils involved – some of them already on their third conference! Two of our students had LAO been appointed to guest-chairing positions.
Alongside lots of fruitful debate, it was a day for forging and developing friendships with students from other schools, with everybody coming together around their shared interests in geopolitics, negotiation and public speaking. The last session of the day saw committees being joined together in General Assembly (GA), creating a larger forum for delegates to speak in front of. This conference’s GA stood out for being particularly orderly and purposeful.
Several of the Year 12 students in our team were lucky to be given awards: Kitty and Olivia were commended for representing India in the Security Council and the Economic and Financial Committee, respectively; Olivia received a special mention representing India in the Political Committee; Amélie was highly commended for representing India in the Health Committee; and Gowri received a Special Mention for representing Bolivia in the Human Rights Committee.
The ALTYMUN conference provided an excellent opportunity for our students to engage in meaningful debate and develop valuable skills in diplomacy and public speaking. With impressive performances from all involved, our team’s commitment and hard work were clear. We commend all our participants for their outstanding contributions and look forward to seeing their continued growth as leaders in future conferences.
