Wonderful Woodworkers

We began Woodwork with Reception last week and they loved it!

I wouldn’t be surprised if all the girls were clamouring to try a bit of hammering at home at the weekend – parents, your DIY nightmares are over…your daughters are coming to the rescue.

The rise in the Forest School movement has had a hugely positive impact in encouraging children to experience working with basic tools, and currently the importance of woodwork for developing creative and critical thinking is increasingly being valued. Woodwork incorporates mathematical thinking, scientific investigation, a developing knowledge of technology, a deepening understanding of the world, physical development and coordination, communication and language, as well as personal and social development.

Although we have started with some basic skills, the girls are catching on fast, and I can see that we will be moving onto more advanced techniques before too long. If you are putting together any flat pack furniture, or building a garden shed, get your girls involved … they are extremely capable, once they are shown what to do.
