WiMUN Conference brings season to a close

MUN conference at Withington Girls’ School, Manchester (2 July)

Our delegations representing Brazil and Saudi Arabia have brought their MUN season to a close at WiMUN, the annual MUN conference at Withington Girls’ School, Manchester.

Our team included both old hands and first-timers, and it was good to see all of them getting involved actively in the debates. This is both easy and hard – easy because the topics are interesting and relevant, and because MUN has so much to offer from public speaking and team-work skills to an understanding of international politics and diplomacy; but hard because you’re required to speak in front of a group of people you’ve never met before, because thorough preparation is essential, and because it is nerve-racking to have to think on the spot when you’re challenged by other delegates in debate!

So well done to all of our delegates for their willingness to be stretched and challenged in the crucible of MUN! Special mention to Kitty ion Year 9 who was awarded Best Young Delegate in the Security Council, Tanya in Year 9 who was awarded Best Young Delegate in the Disarmament and Security Committee and Olivia in Year 9 who got a Special Mention in the Youth Committee.

Year 12 student Dora, who had been invited to act as a guest-chair in the World Health Organisation, said: “I have been looking forward to chairing since I started MUN in Year 8. I have been steeped in MUN protocol for a long time, but it was still a whole new experience. Along with my two co-chairs, I managed to lead my committee in a controlled and effective way through fruitful debates, and have some fun along the way too!”
