Sport Round-up

Hockey

On Thursday, our Under 16 girl’s hockey team finally got the chance to play their Schools Championship national cup quarter-final. After two cancellations due to snow and frozen pitches and a long away day that ended in disappointment the match was going ahead.

After a great match vs Sedbergh in the 4th round (5-1 win) the girls were ready for this match and looking to progress to the semi-finals. Unfortunately it was not meant to be and St John’s won the match after a very competitive 70 minutes.

Queen’s looked great from the first whistle and piled on the pressure for the first 7 minutes and came away with a well deserved goal, neatly finished by Emily in Year 10. Seemingly caught celebrating, St John’s were able to quickly counter and score 2 in quick succession and were soon 2-1 down inside 15 minutes. Unfortunately, after some great defensive play and dealing with the pressure well, Queen’s went into half-time 4-1 down but still with every thing to play for.

After a half-time regroup the message was clear, go out and keep playing for the team and put the pressure on early. And that is exactly what happened. With short corners and great shots the St John's keeper was having an excellent game and not allowing anything in. Throughout the second half, Queen’s kept the pressure on but where unable to get the all important goals.

The final whistle went and the score was 5-1. This was not an accurate representation of how close the game was and I think everyone can be proud of how they played, not only in this match but the tournament as a whole. They finished 5th overall in the country and have done Queen’s proud. They gave their all in every match and this will only help us looking forward to next season where we get to go again.

Congratulations to our Equestrian Team who, despite the extremely cold weather, produced amazing performances at the NSEA Showjumping Championship last weekend!

There were clear rounds for Millie and Sophie, with Abby jumping her first 1.05cm track. The Equestrian Team, including Sophie, Eva, Lydia and Megan, came 3rd overall!

Football

Our Under 12s to Under 16s have been learning ball control this term, including how to pass and move to find space on the pitch. This is something that has been shown many times in training and is gradually making its way into games!

"The girls' understanding of Football is getting much better and it will be only a matter of time before wins start turning up for us!"

Mr Crump, Football coach

In the last two games for our Under 14s and 15s, the girls showed great examples of passing and moving to create space for themselves or for other players, and to get behind the ball when its lost. As always, the girls' determination and brilliant attitude shows great promise for future matches!
