Year 10 girls attended a 'women in computing' event at Oxford University (with a 5.30am start on the last day of their holidays, and with 6 of them having finished a three day D of E event) where they attended lectures given by the Oxford academics as well as talks from female Facebook engineers and the head of the Stemettes organisation.
They also had a tour of Exeter College and were given a flavour of what it would be like to study at Oxford.
A hands on session saw them getting to grips with the Pascal programming language and using recursion to maximise the efficiency of their programs.
The finale was an eye opening careers talk that gave the girls an idea of the benefits of studying computing to degree level, with higher than average starting salaries and an increasing availability of computing related jobs due to the current shortage of skills.
Plenty of food for thought and a validation of the choices that they have made.
