Ideas and inspiraton

Year 10 and 11 GCSE Art students went on a trip to Manchester to visit the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery.

Year 11 have just begun their exam preparation and the trip provided an opportunity to make connections to the way in which other artists’ work with this years themes.

For the Year 10 who have embarked upon the theme of ‘Autobiography’ this visit was also extremely useful for collecting ideas and inspiration particularly on portraiture.

At the Whitworth the students were given the chance to see Elizabeth Price’s piece “A long memory” which brought together many new and acclaimed works, the exhibition engaged with Price’s pre-occupations of technology, history, politics and pop music.

At Manchester Art Gallery students got the chance to see the permanent collection with many wonderful Pre-Raphaelite paintings and also the contemporary paintings of Louise Giovanelli whose new work was shown alongside rarely-seen early Renaissance panel paintings from the galleries collection, as well as a selection of contemporary works by Victor Man and Mark Manders.
