Expanding Horizons

Year 12 girls learned about the literal 'world of opportunities' for studying at a university overseas in a talk by foreign universities expert David Hawkins.

David introduced girls to the idea of study abroad focusing on US, Canadian and also European universities and emphasising the many differences between higher education systems internationally. "When we hear the word 'football' we think of one thing if we are British, something completely different if we are American and something different again if we are Australian," said David, who is director of 'The University Guy' application support agency.

"It is the same with universities with each country offering their own very different way of educating people whether it is to prepare them for a career, a technical specialism or a specific academic subject."

David talked not only about the great openings to study abroad but also about some of the obstacles such as challenging entry tests and also high fees in countries such as the USA.

Year 12 student Amelia said: "The talk was great for making you think about the possibilities that are out there but also focused on some of the harsh realities of making these kind of applications which is really important."
