Language Discovery Programme
This year the Lower School introduced Mandarin and French to the curriculum, in addition to the Spanish which our pupils already learnt.
Until then other languages were taught through clubs, however this innovative move now sees three languages on the primary curriculum and it is expected that this new focus will ignite a love of languages across the school.
The subjects are taught through the Language Discovery Programme, meaning that the whole school from Reception to Year 6 learns a specific language for the year. This operates on a carousel programme taught by subject specialists and native speakers. It will be particularly beneficial to children in Year Reception to Year 3 when little brains are like sponges, perfectly placed to soak up new languages and cultures.
Queen’s has for a long time been a centre of excellence for teaching and learning Modern Languages including Mandarin. The school is an Advanced Confucius Classroom (LINK); a title bestowed by the Confucius Institute which allows it to benefit from Hanban teachers from China who are based at the school.
This is now supported by the linguistic expertise of Headmistress Mrs Cookson and a number of bilingual and trilingual staff members working at the Lower School.
