Language Discovery Programme

At the Lower School we teach Mandarin, French and Spanish across the whole school, from Reception to Year 6.

The subjects are taught through the Language Discovery Programme, meaning that the whole school from Reception to Year 6 learns a specific language for the year. This operates on a carousel programme taught by subject specialists and native speakers. It will be particularly beneficial to children in Reception to Year 3 when little brains are like sponges, perfectly placed to soak up new languages and cultures.

Queen’s has for a long time been a centre of excellence for teaching and learning Modern Languages including Mandarin. The school is a Confucius Classroom ; a title bestowed by the Confucius Institute which allows it to benefit from Hanban teachers from China who are based at the school.

This is now supported by the linguistic expertise of Head of Lower School Mrs Cookson and a number of bilingual and trilingual staff members working at the Lower School.

The Lower School operates a Mini Mandarin Club for Year 2 pupils attending other schools in the area. It runs from 4-4.45pm on a Thursday at the Liverpool Road site. Online registration is available here but spaces are limited:
