An exciting discovery has been made beneath the site of our new Astroturf. Workers digging at the site recently stumbled across a time capsule that had been buried by pupils and staff a quarter of a century ago, in the year 2000!
Though we suspect it was originally a humble cardboard box within the capsule, its contents are nothing short of fascinating. From school timetables and newsletters, to coins, a school photograph, and even a mysterious curtain pole end. The time capsule offers a wonderful glimpse into Queen’s School life at the turn of the millennium.
Here’s a peek at what we discovered:
- Have Mynde magazines (’96, ’97, ’98)
- Prize Giving & Open Morning Programmes (2000)
- Newsletters and newspaper clippings
- A skiing advert (2000)
- An audio tape, a video, and… a microscope!
- Typed “Elephant Facts” (yes, really!)
- Shopping receipts from March 2000
- Coins from the era
- A rolled school photograph with a list of names
- Timetables, application forms, and even… a John’s Gospel!
- A school blazer too.
These treasures will now be preserved in the Queen’s Archives, alongside Cheshire Records and Archives. It’s incredible to see how much has changed – and stayed the same – since 2000.
Our Alumni Manager shared news of the discovery in the alumni Facebook group, to which many ‘old girls’ engaged with, sharing their memories of the event.
“I remember doing this for the Millennium! I think each form or year group got to choose something to go inside.”
“I managed to acquire the ‘capsule’: it was a small redundant tank from a brewery that was a client of my husband’s. I was a school governor at the time.”
“I remember the time capsule well. I think we hoped it would be discovered more than 25 years later!”
“I didn’t think this would be discovered until 2090 or ever!”
“It sounds vaguely familiar. I think it was buried behind the lower tennis courts or whatever they were called.”
